The smallest bullet diameter allowed for plains game is .270. Commonly available and effective cartridges include .270 Winchester, 7mm-08 Remington, 7x57mm Mauser, .280 Remington, any of the 7mm magnum cartridges, .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, any of the .300 magnum cartridges, .338-06, .338 Winchester Magnum, .35 Whelen, .375 H&H Magnum, and above. Essentially, any cartridge normally sufficient for elk hunting will be suitable for plains game. Most shooting will not exceed 100 yards. The slower, heavier bullets tend to outperform the lighter, faster wildcat around here.
